Curriculum
The Mayo School of Health Sciences Physician Assistant (PA) Fellowship in Hospital Internal Medicine (HIM) prepares individuals for professional practice in hospital medicine. The HIM PA Fellowship curriculum is based upon the Society of Hospital Medicine's "Core Competencies." These include knowledge, skills and understanding of health care areas which are:
- By the end of the fellowship year, the PA fellow will be able to exhibit a working knowledge of the following disease entities:
- Acute coronary syndrome
- Acute renal failure
- Alcohol and drug withdrawal
- Asthma
- Cardiac arrhythmia
- Care of the critically ill patient
- Cellulitis
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- Community acquired pneumonia
- Heart failure
- Delirium and dementia
- Diabetes mellitus
- Gastrointestinal bleed
- Hospital-acquired pneumonia
- Pain management
- Perioperative medicine
- Sepsis Syndromes
- Shock
- Stroke
- Urinary tract infection
- Venous thromboembolism
- Hematologic disorders and malignancies
- Solid tumor malignancies
- By the end of the fellowship year, the PA fellow will have experience performing the following skills/procedures:
- Chest radiograph interpretation
- Electrocardiogram interpretation
- Emergency procedures
- Lumbar puncture
- Paracentesis
- Thoracentesis
- Vascular access
- Problem-focused physical exam
- Focused patient presentation to supervising faculty
- Bedside ultrasound interpretation
- Bone marrow biopsy (Hematology/Oncology track only)
- By the end of the fellowship year, the PA fellow will have a working knowledge and understanding in the following health care areas:
- Care of the elderly patient
- Care of the vulnerable populations
- Communication
- Diagnostic decision making
- Drug safety, pharmacoeconomics, and pharmacoepidemiology
- Equitable allocation of resources
- Evidence-based medicine
- Hospitalist PA as a consultant
- Hospitalist PA as a teacher
- Information management
- Leadership
- Management practices
- Nutrition and the hospitalized patient
- Palliative care
Rotations
The HIM PA Fellowship is comprised of 12 rotations in the various specialty areas:
Traditional Hospitalist Track
- Hematology/Medical Oncology (elective in traditional track; required for Hematology/Oncology track)

Subspecialty rotations may vary from two to four weeks in length.

Mayo School of Health Sciences uses evaluative tools that include:
- Written examination
- Demonstration of skills
- Self-assessment exercises
- Faculty reviews
Specifically the HIM PA fellow will be evaluated by the following assessment tools:
- End-of-rotation evaluations
- End-year project
- Midyear and end-year formal comprehensive evaluations
- Competency checklist components completed by end of fellowship training
- End project for core competency "modules" with various assessment tools
- End-year Summative Portfolio

Physician assistant fellow supervision
Physician assistants provide diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive health-care services under the supervision of physicians. During the PA Fellowship, the PA Fellow will be assigned a supervising physician who will provide proper supervision in concordance with Arizona State law and Mayo Clinic practice guidelines for physician assistants.
