Genetic Counseling Laboratory Internship (Minnesota)

Mayo School of Health Sciences (MSHS) offers a 2-week Genetic Counseling Laboratory Internship at Mayo Clinic Rochester. The program gives students who are currently enrolled in a master's degree genetic counseling program direct exposure to the genetic counseling role in clinical genetic laboratories.

The internship will include experiences in cytogenetics, molecular genetics, and biochemical genetics with a primary experience in one of these areas.

Air travel and housing accommodations are provided to students for the duration of the program. Food and local transportation are the student's responsibility.

Program Goals
The goal of the Genetic Counseling Laboratory Internship is to provide genetic counseling students the opportunity to obtain knowledge and experience in the field of genetic testing and laboratory genetic counseling, by working directly with genetic counselors employed in a genetic laboratory.

Accreditation
MSHS will initiate a legal contract/affiliation agreement with the student's degree-granting institution if one is not already in place. Permanent or ad hoc affiliations with programs may be attained as desired per the American Board of Genetic Counseling guidelines.

Facilities
The Division of Laboratory Genetics at Mayo Clinic Rochester includes state-of-the-art cytogenetics, molecular genetics, biochemical genetics and maternal serum screening laboratories. Each one actively contributes to the study of genetic disease and the advancement of genetic testing and related technology. Within each laboratory, board-certified directors and genetic counselors work closely with health care providers and laboratory staff to ensure that accurate, reliable and timely results are available to patients.

The Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester comprises an extensive outpatient complex, two hospitals, and research and education facilities. It is among the largest, most advanced medical centers in the world.

Graduation and Certification
Upon successful completion of the Genetic Counseling Internship, you will receive a Certificate of Completion from Mayo School of Health Sciences, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.

Hours
For the majority of the internship, your learning schedule will occur Monday through Friday during normal business hours. Hours will vary with rotation.
