Echocardiography Program (Arizona and Minnesota)
Mayo School of Health Sciences offers the 21-month Echocardiography Program at Mayo Clinic's campuses in Rochester, Minn., and Scottsdale, Ariz.
Students who complete the program receive a certificate of completion from Mayo School of Health Sciences. For students attending the Rochester, Minn., campus, this program is also offered as a collaborative bachelor's degree with the University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) Bachelor of Science in Health Professions Echocardiography Track.
Academic lectures originate primarily from the Rochester campus and are made available to students in Arizona using interactive video-enabled classrooms. This system goes beyond traditional distance education and allows live face-to-face collaboration between students and faculty.
The Echocardiography Program offers an exceptional educational experience by providing the high-quality didactic and clinical experiences needed to create a competent entry-level cardiac sonographer in an environment based on teamwork and mutual respect.
Students have an opportunity to train or observe in congenital echocardiography and stress echocardiography. Mayo Clinic's large, diverse patient population provides experience with a broad range of cardiac problems.

The Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester, Minn., includes an extensive outpatient complex, Saint Marys Hospital, Rochester Methodist Hospital, and substantial research and education facilities.
This Mayo Clinic site is among the largest, most advanced medical centers in the world.
Primarily, education for this internship is conducted at Saint Marys Hospital, a 1,265-bed facility that was founded in 1889. Within Saint Marys is the 85-bed Mayo Eugenio Litta Children's Hospital.
The Mayo Clinic Echocardiography Laboratory in Minnesota, one of the largest echocardiography laboratories in the world, features state-of-the-art diagnostic, therapeutic, educational and research facilities.
More than 30 full-feature scanning stations are located throughout the Mayo Clinic complex. Approximately 90 cardiac sonographers perform more than 250 echocardiographic procedures each day. The Echocardiography Laboratory is also active in clinical research and education.
Students on the Arizona campus are required to spend the first two weeks on the Rochester, Minn., campus attending various labs and courses and a conference.
Mayo Clinic in Arizona has two campuses. On the Mayo Clinic campus in Phoenix is the state-of-the-art Mayo Clinic Hospital, the first hospital entirely designed and built by Mayo Clinic. It has been recognized several times by Phoenix magazine as the "Best Hospital in Phoenix."
The Mayo Clinic campus in Scottsdale is centered around a beautiful, five-story outpatient clinic. This modern facility contains extensive exam rooms, an outpatient surgery center equipped for general anesthesia, a full-service laboratory, pharmacy, patient education library, endoscopy suite, and a 188-seat auditorium for patient, staff and student education programs. Services in numerous medical and surgical disciplines are provided, including outstanding programs in cancer treatment and organ transplantation.
The Mayo Clinic Echocardiography Laboratory in Arizona is one of the most progressive laboratories in the Southwest. By offering advanced echocardiographic analysis, 4-D technology, and comprehensive and detailed testing, the lab is on the cutting edge. The lab performs transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiograms, including pre- and post-heart transplant evaluations, CRT studies, and CIMT assessment.
Pharmacological, supine bike and exercise stress echocardiograms also are performed. The lab administers approximately 70 exams a day and is staffed with nine echocardiologists, 13 cardiac sonographers, two advanced clinical sonographers and three support staff. The lab is active in clinical research and education and is a clinical site for the Mayo School of Health Sciences Echocardiography Program.
Graduation and certification
Upon completion of the program, students receive a certificate of completion from Mayo School of Health Sciences. Those completing the collaborative bachelor's degree with UMR also receive a Bachelor of Science in Health Professions degree.
Graduates are eligible to take the appropriate professional certification examinations.
The Echocardiography Program is a full-time (40 hours a week) program. Your learning schedule includes eight-hour days five days a week.
The Echocardiography Program admits up to 11 students at the Rochester, Minn., campus and the Scottsdale, Ariz., campus. Therefore, class sizes and clinical groups are small, and one-on-one instruction is provided.
