Echocardiography Program (Arizona and Minnesota)
Program Description
Mayo School of Health Sciences offers a 21-month Echocardiography Program.
Students who complete the program receive a certificate from the Mayo School of Health Sciences. For students attending the Rochester, Minnesota campus, this program is also offered as a collaborative bachelor's degree with the University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) - Bachelor of Science in Health Professions Echocardiography track.
The echocardiography program is offered at campuses in Rochester, Minn., and Scottsdale, Ariz. Academic lectures originate primarily from the Rochester campus and are made available to students in Arizona using interactive video-enabled classrooms. This system goes beyond traditional distance education and allows live, face-to-face collaboration between students and faculty. The program offers an exceptional educational experience by providing the high-quality didactic and clinical experiences needed to create a competent entry-level cardiac sonographer in an environment based on teamwork and mutual respect.
Students will have an opportunity to train or observe in congenital echocardiography and stress echocardiography. Mayo's large, diverse patient population provides experience with a broad range of cardiac problems.

Accreditation
The Echocardiography Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Educational Programs (CAAHEP).
Mayo Clinic and the University of Minnesota are accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission.
Facilities
Rochester Campus
The Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester, Minn., comprises an extensive outpatient complex, Saint Marys Hospital and Rochester Methodist Hospital, and substantial research and education facilities.
This Mayo site is among the largest, most advanced medical centers in the world.
Primarily, education for this internship is conducted at Saint Marys Hospital, a 1,157-bed facility that was founded in 1889. Within Saint Marys is the 85-bed Mayo Eugenio Litta Children's Hospital.
The Mayo Clinic Echocardiography Lab in Minnesota, one of the largest echo laboratories in the world, features state-of-the-art diagnostic, therapeutic, educational and research facilities. More than 30 full-feature scanning stations are located throughout the Mayo Clinic complex. Approximately 90 cardiac sonographers perform more than 250 echocardiographic procedures each day. The Echo Lab is also active in clinical research and education.
Arizona Campus
Students on the Arizona campus are required to spend the first two weeks on the Rochester, Minnesota campus attending various labs, courses and a conference.
Mayo Clinic in Arizona has two campuses.
On the Phoenix campus is the state-of-the-art Mayo Clinic Hospital, the first hospital entirely designed and built by Mayo. It has been recognized several times by Phoenix magazine as "the Best Hospital in Phoenix."
The Scottsdale campus is centered around a beautiful, five-story outpatient clinic. This modern facility contains extensive exam rooms, an outpatient surgery center equipped for general anesthesia, a full-service laboratory, pharmacy, patient education library, endoscopy suite, and a 188-seat auditorium for patient, staff and student education programs. Services in numerous medical and surgical disciplines are provided, including outstanding programs in cancer treatment and organ transplantation.
The Mayo Clinic echocardiography lab in Arizona is one of the most progressive laboratories in the southwest. By offering advanced echocardiographic analysis, 4-D technology, comprehensive and detailed testing, the lab is on the cutting edge. They perform trans-thoracic and trans-esophageal echocardiograms, including pre- and post-heart transplant evaluations, CRT studies, CIMT assessment.
They also perform pharmacological, supine bike and exercise stress echocardiograms. The lab administers approximately 70 exams per day; and is staffed with nine echocardiologists, 13 cardiac sonographers, two advanced clinical sonographers and three support staff. They are active in clinical research and education; and are a clinical site for the Mayo School of Health Sciences Echocardiography Program.
Graduation and Certification
Upon completion of the program, students will receive a certificate of completion from Mayo School of Health Sciences.
Those completing the collaborative bachelor's degree with UMR will also receive a Bachelor of Science in Health Professions degree.
Graduates will be eligible to take the appropriate professional certification examinations.
Hours
The Echocardiography Program is a full-time (40 hours per week) program. Your learning schedule will include eight-hour days, five days per week.
Class Size
The Echocardiography Program admits up to 11 students at the Rochester, Minn. campus and the Scottsdale, Ariz. campus. Therefore, class sizes and clinical groups are small and one-on-one instruction is provided.
