You choose three areas of personal interest on which to focus your athletic training studies during the Athletic Training Summer Internship. You are expected to demonstrate competency in your chosen area at the end of the internship. At program completion, you are expected to present a topic of your choice to sports medicine faculty. It does not have to be related to the didactic topics you choose.
You have the opportunity to:
- Observe surgery, physician clinics, diagnostic ultrasounds, performance-enhancement programs, physical therapy and cardiac rehab
- Tour our state-of-the-art Dan Abraham Healthy Living Center
- Choose to visit other departments throughout campus as time allows
Additionally, you have the opportunity to attend an arthroscopy seminar and case presentations. You have the option to assist in providing athletic training coverage to community sports events under the supervision of a staff certified athletic trainer.
Along with the necessary professional skills, the Athletic Training Summer Internship emphasizes the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Program faculty members believe that this is the strongest preparation for a career as a competent practitioner in today's evolving health care environment.
Grading or evaluation
Mayo School of Health Sciences uses evaluative tools that include:
- Demonstration of skills
- Self-assessment exercises
- Faculty reviews
Mayo's system of evaluation provides students and faculty with a comprehensive look at individual performance. This allows faculty and administrative staff to direct students who are experiencing academic difficulty to the appropriate support resources, including tutoring programs and counseling opportunities.
In addition, the internship will adhere to the academic criteria of the educational institution you are attending.
Mayo School of Health Sciences is committed to developing and maintaining the best education programs. The curriculum and other aspects of this program are assessed constantly and changed as necessary to ensure the highest quality training.
