Urology (Minnesota)
Description
Students are assigned to a specific urology consultant(s) during their four- to eight-week elective. They participate in morning and afternoon rounds with the urology resident and consultant. Students spend half their time in the urologic clinic learning about the office practice of urology; the other half of their time is spent in the operating room. Students also attend academic conferences, including the Monday Imaging Conference, Thursday Pediatric Urology Conference, Thursday Topic-Oriented Journal Club, and a monthly Genitourinary Multidisciplinary Cancer Conference.
Specific goals
- Formulate an approach to the workup and management of patients with urologic disease.
- Become familiar with approaches to the management of patients with hematuria, urinary calculi, urinary tract infection and urologic neoplasms.
Activity outline
Students work directly with a urologic resident and consultant. They participate in morning and afternoon rounds; take histories; and perform physical examinations, ward work and operating room procedures. Students are required to attend weekly seminars, X-ray conferences, and journal club. Limited exposure is available in renal transplantation, pediatrics, urodynamics and urologic prosthetics. Opportunity is available for students to participate in simulation and training programs in the Department of Urology.
