Surgery, Colon and Rectal (Minnesota)

Description

This course encompasses clinical activity in anorectal surgery and endoscopy, as well as transabdominal surgery for diseases of the colon and rectum.

Specific goals

  1. Gain experience examining patients with disorders of the colon and rectum.
  2. Gain proficiency in endoscopy, particularly proctoscopy.
  3. Participate in the operating room, as well as preoperative and postoperative care, under the guidance of residents and consultants.
  4. Become familiar with the technique of proctoscopy and examination of patients with disorders in this surgical subspecialty; manage such patients under close supervision preoperatively and post-operatively.

Activity outline

Students are assigned to one surgeon. They work with this surgeon and his/her team in the preoperative, operative and postoperative care of colon and rectal patients. Students also have the opportunity to do flexible sigmoidoscopies.

Method of evaluation

The resident staff and assigned consultants evaluate students on their clinical service.
