Students participate in a busy, academic, tertiary referral, clinical and surgical orthopedic surgery practice.
- Perform thorough orthopedic examinations of the axial skeleton and extremities.
- Gain an exposure to musculoskeletal illness including fractures, tumors, soft tissue trauma, repetitive soft tissue injuries, arthritic conditions and sports medicine.
- Develop basic surgical skills including the application of dressings, casts and splints.
Students attend daily hospital rounds at Mayo Clinic hospital and participate in taking histories and physical examinations. Students will participate in orthopedic surgical procedures at Mayo Clinic hospital and the Mayo Outpatient Surgery Center. Required didactic conferences and a thorough clinical exposure to orthopedics will also be provided.
Method of evaluation
Consultants who work directly with students during the rotation will provide a final performance evaluation. Mid-rotation and end rotation feedback will be provided to the student. This information is conveyed to their home institutions.
