Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, Transfusion Medicine (Minnesota)

Description

The rotation is to provide the learner with a solid background in immunohematology and transfusion medicine.

Specific goals

  1. Participate in daily morning conferences
  2. Support and assist the pathology resident in his/her daily responsibilities.
  3. Rotate through the work units of Transfusion Medicine and become familiar with the work processes in each area. Rotations include Donor Services, Apheresis Laboratory, Component Laboratory, Transfusion Laboratory, Human Cellular Therapy Laboratory and other hospital services.
  4. Discuss the indications for:
    Irradiation of products
    • CMV negative products
    • HLA matched platelets
    • Crossmatched platelets
    • Leuko-reduced products
    • Washed products
  5. Discuss the etiology, clinical manifestations, and treatment of adverse effects of transfusion including circulatory overload, TRALI, immediate hemolytic, delayed hemolytic, febrile non-hemolytic, and anaphylactic transfusion reactions.
  6. Perform serologic tests for ABO/Rh testing, antibody screening, crossmatching, antibody identification and the direct antiglobulin test.
  7. Discuss the principles of the base serologic tests performed in Transfusion Medicine.

Activity outline

The student will attend daily conferences to review problems and cases from the previous working day. Introductory rotations will be scheduled through the work units of Transfusion Medicine. A "hands on" serologic laboratory experience will include basic ABO/Rh, antibody screening, crossmatching, antibody identification, and direct antiglobulin testing. The student will participate in the daily activities of the current Transfusion Medicine resident.

Method of evaluation

A pre- and post-test will be administered to the trainee. Evaluation of the test scores will be based on the percent improvement. Trainers, resident and staff physicians will evaluate the trainee's attitude, commitment and participation in the scheduled training events of this rotation.
