Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Diseases Inpatient Service (Florida)

Description

Medical students choosing this elective will be based at Mayo Clinic hospital. The primary focus of their experience will be consultative, but a few patients with predominately pulmonary problems will be primarily managed by this service. Students participate in rounds on patients assigned, attend morning conference, and participate in the evaluation and treatment of patients referred with pulmonary disease. The student will be expected to see two to four new consultations each day and participate in special procedures such as thoracentesis and bronchoscopy. Each patient is presented to the thoracic disease consultant and the cases are discussed in detail. Students spend additional time each day learning to interpret pulmonary function tests and chest imaging.

Specific Goals:

  1. Improve skills in history taking, physical examination and the management of patients with pulmonary diseases (e.g., asthma, cancer, COPD, pulmonary infections, bronchiectasis, abnormal chest radiograph, pleural disease, restrictive lung disease, dyspnea, cough, and chest pain of unknown etiology).
  2. Become familiar with the various laboratory-based procedures used in pulmonary medicine, including bronchoscopy and pulmonary function.
  3. Improve the interpretation skills of chest imaging both chest x-rays and CT imaging.
