Internal Medicine, Hematology/Oncology (Arizona)
Description
Students work with members of the Section of Hematology/Medical Oncology in the outpatient setting at Mayo Clinic Scottsdale and in an inpatient setting at Mayo Clinic Hospital.
Specific goals
- Learn the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for hematologic and oncologic disease through direct patient contact.
- Expand basic knowledge with appropriate reading materials, as well as weekly clinical conferences.
- Participate in bone marrow aspirate and biopsy procedures.
- Interpret peripheral blood smears and serum protein electrophoretic strips.
Activity outline
Students will work primarily in the outpatient clinic seeing new subspecialty consultations, as well as follow-up of patients. The opportunity exists for students to also round on the hospital service.
Method of evaluation
Consultants who work with the students provide written performance evaluations. The program coordinator formulates a consensus evaluation from these written evaluations and holds a debriefing session with students to gain appropriate feedback.
