Clinician Investigator Program
Clinical Research Training Program

Program Description

The two-year Urologic Oncology Fellowship Program provides major clinical emphasis in all aspects of urologic oncologic surgery. The program can be tailored to reflect your interests and requirements. The fellowship program includes both clinical and research aspects.

The overriding goal of this fellowship is for you to obtain an academic position in urology after completing this training program.

This fellowship is accredited by the Society of Urologic Oncology (SUO).

Curriculum

The first one or two years of the fellowship program include basic science research in the Urology Research Laboratory. This fellowship can be extended to three years to allow additional time for protocol participation and the development of such protocols. Further laboratory research is available on short-term requests. Possible investigations could be extended to those with interests in the Genetics Laboratory as part of our SPORE grant, as well as combined studies on the molecular level with the departments of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology.

The fellowship includes one year of rotations through Radiation and Medical Oncology, as well as the Urologic Oncology services. In addition, you will receive training in minimally invasive techniques that pertain to urologic oncology. Other rotations provide exposure to pure laparoscopy, hand-assisted laparoscopy, daVinci robotic surgery, percutaneous techniques, and minimally invasive tissue ablation techniques (radiofrequency ablation, cryoablation).

Experience with urologic oncology clinical trials and translational research is also available, providing exposure to the medical and surgical aspects of treating advanced urologic malignancies, especially renal cell carcinoma, bladder and testicular cancer.

Fellows will have full responsibility for running inpatient and outpatient urology services and will participate actively in surgery. Fellows are also expected to assist in teaching Urology residents and in running monthly Urology Oncology multidisciplinary conferences. Full participation in the academic lecture program within the Urology Department is expected, as well as presentation on the regional, national and international level.

Admissions

Qualifications
You may apply to the Fellowship if you are expected to complete an approved residency program in urology. This includes, in special circumstances, qualified candidates who have completed their formal training in foreign countries and who have completed the requirements for foreign graduates. Applicants who intend to pursue an academic career will be given priority in consideration for the program.
