Clinical Training
The clinical curriculum will help you develop your clinical skills and gain specific experience in your primary field of interest. The year combines intensive clinical experience in medicine and surgery with ample opportunities for reading and individualized studies.

Rotations
During Mayo Clinic's Transitional Year Residency, you will participate in the following required rotations for eight months:

Rotation Length
Inpatient internal medicine 4 months
Emergency medicine 1 month
Ambulatory care 1 month
Primary care specialty (pediatrics, general surgery, family practice, emergency medicine or ambulatory care) 2 months
Electives 4 months

Off-site Rotations (optional)
In special circumstances you may be able to choose to take an assignment at either Mayo Clinic in Rochester or Mayo Clinic in Arizona during your residency. Mayo Clinic funds the authorized additional costs of your travel, housing, auto rental and licensure fees. Our residents consistently rate these rotations very highly.

Electives
To round out your residency experience, you will have four one-month electives. Options include:

  • Anesthesiology
  • Dermatology
  • Diagnostic radiology
  • Gynecologic surgery
  • Internal medicine subspecialties
  • Neurology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Ophthalmology
  • Otorhinolaryngology
  • Physical medicine and rehabilitation
  • Plastic surgery
  • Research
  • Urology

In addition to these electives, you may develop other approved training experiences in cooperation with the faculty at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville.

Call Frequency
Your call schedule will vary by individual rotation. Mayo Clinic follows the recommendations of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

Committee Assignments
You will be given an opportunity to gain experience in a number of administrative capacities during your training.

Evaluation
To ensure that you acquire adequate knowledge and develop your technical skills, your performance will be monitored carefully during the course of your residency. You will be evaluated formally by your supervising faculty member after each clinical rotation. In addition, you will regularly evaluate the faculty to ensure that your educational needs are being met.

Didactic Training
Clinical conferences, seminars, small discussion groups, journal clubs and one-on-one instruction are all an integral part of the Transitional Year Residency. These are offered at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville.

Teaching Opportunities
You will have the opportunity to teach Mayo Medical School students and visiting students from other medical schools through bedside instruction and formal didactic lectures.

Research Training
Your research opportunities at Mayo Clinic are outstanding. You are encouraged to participate in research projects with the consulting staff, and can work on part of an ongoing study or develop a specific individual short-term project. You can participate in both clinical studies and laboratory-based projects.

Additional Training
At the conclusion of your Transitional Year Residency Program, you may wish to continue your graduate medical education at Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education. Your faculty adviser will give you information about these opportunities.
