Mayo Clinic in Rochester is a leading center for kidney and pancreas transplantation, performing between 200 and 300 transplants annually for the past four years. Active clinical programs include living donor and deceased donor kidney transplantation; simultaneous kidney and pancreas transplantation; pancreas after kidney transplantation; and pancreas transplantation alone. Clinical pancreatic islet transplantation is also in the advanced development stage.

Emphasis is placed on overcoming barriers to transplantation, and a number of innovative protocols are currently active, including:

  • Positive cross match and ABO incompatible living donor kidney transplantation
  • Living donor kidney transplantation followed by autologous stem cell transplantation for renal failure due to plasma cell disorders
  • Transplantation for primary focal segmental glomerulosclerosis with high risk of post-transplant recurrence
  • Combined liver and kidney transplantation for genetically based diseases such as familial amyloidosis and primary hyperoxaluria

The Kidney Pancreas Transplant Program is staffed by seven consultant nephrologists, five consultant transplant surgeons, seven clinical nurse coordinators, three physician assistants, three study coordinators, three social workers and allied health professionals. All of Mayo Clinic's kidney and pancreas transplant specialists will participate in your fellowship training.

Inpatient and outpatient areas dedicated to transplant patient care are also staffed by specialized nursing and allied health professionals. In addition to kidney and pancreas transplantation, the Transplant Center integrates programs in liver, heart and lung, and bone marrow transplantation to specifically facilitate collaboration in clinical, research and educational pursuits among transplant specialists at Mayo Clinic.

Long-term kidney and pancreas transplant outpatient follow-up occurs within the nephrology outpatient clinic and in specialized outpatient clinics in transplant-related infectious diseases, endocrinology, dermatology and cardiology.

All tissue typing, cross matching and alloantibody assays, and therapeutic apheresis occur in the outpatient buildings conveniently located on the Mayo Clinic campus.
