Mayo Clinic has a strong commitment to the field of heart and lung (cardiothoracic) transplantation. Supported by a tradition of excellence in cardiology and cardiac surgery, the program encompasses heart, heart-lung, and lung transplantation, as well as the use of ventricular assist devices for infants, children and adults.

Since the program began in 1988, the Mayo Cardiothoracic Transplant Team has performed over 250 heart transplants. The program has consistently produced excellent outcomes with survival rates among the highest in the country and excellent patient and family satisfaction.

Mayo Clinic's multi-disciplinary team approach to medicine is ideally suited to the complex problems presented by heart transplant patients. The heart transplantation program brings together the collective expertise of specialists with extensive experience in transplant surgery and medicine.

The heart transplant program include five transplant cardiologists, four cardiovascular transplant surgeons, and is staffed by specialists in adult and pediatric cardiology, infectious diseases, nephrology, thoracic diseases, anesthesiology, critical care medicine and pathology.

Active laboratory research programs contribute to advancements and refinements in this important clinical field, resulting in innovative and better care for patients.
