Mayo Clinic in Minnesota is one of the leading medical centers for bone marrow transplantation (BMT or blood and marrow transplantation). Mayo Clinic offers many innovative uses of bone marrow transplant for special situations.
In 2002, Mayo Clinic performed 239 BMTs on adults and children. Of these, 29 were allogeneic and 210 were autologous. Mayo Clinic in Minnesota has performed more than 1,000 bone marrow transplant procedures since it began offering this treatment in 1982. Mayo also offers syngeneic bone marrow transplant.
Mayo's program emphasizes performing bone marrow transplant on an outpatient basis. All adult transplants are performed in Mayo's dedicated 20-bed unit at Rochester Methodist Hospital. Pediatric transplants are performed in a new BMT unit located at Mayo's Eugenio Litta Children's Hospital. All transplant rooms are equipped with high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters to reduce the risk of infection.

In addition to caring for patients in their clinical practices, Mayo Clinic's faculty members are committed to teaching and facilitating the growth of medical knowledge. Many of our faculty have published and lectured extensively and are highly regarded in their field. You will have direct access to the blood and marrow transplant faculty at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota throughout your training.
Advisors and Mentors
You will be assigned a faculty advisor who can provide comprehensive educational advice and personal support. Your advisor also will serve as a contact point, introducing you and your family to Rochester and the Mayo Clinic system.
Visiting Professors
Many prominent professors visit Mayo Clinic each year. They present their work during noon and/or morning lectures and participate in hospital rounds. You will be encouraged to take full advantage of these opportunities.
