Program Description

Mayo Clinic Arizona’s three-year Plastic Surgery Residency Program prepares you for a career as a competent, mature, compassionate and ethical plastic surgeon who is committed to superior patient care, research and continuing education. Graduates are ready to excel in academic medicine or private practice. Approved by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, this unique program offers one-on-one training in the outpatient setting, hospital and operating room.

Mayo's high faculty-to-resident ratio, large patient population and state-of-the-art diagnostic, therapeutic and research facilities combine to create a truly integrated educational experience. The "Mayo Way" of graduate medical education ensures you will have the finest teaching and the broadest patient care experience possible during a busy, hands-on residency program.

Certification
After successfully completing this residency, you will be eligible to take the American Board of Plastic Surgery certifying exam.

Department and Faculty

Skilled plastic surgeons at Mayo Clinic provide a wide range of reconstructive and cosmetic surgery services. Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is staffed by 18 plastic surgeons with specialized training and skills in one or more of the following surgical subspecialties:

  • Aesthetic plastic surgery
  • Reconstructive surgery
  • Craniofacial surgery
  • Reconstructive microsurgery
  • Pediatric plastic surgery
  • Laser surgery
  • Hand surgery

Three plastic surgeons practice at Mayo's Jacksonville, Fla., location, 11 in Rochester, Minn., and four in Scottsdale/Phoenix, Ariz. Plastic surgeons work closely with physicians from other specialties to offer patients comprehensive medical care to meet their reconstructive and cosmetic surgical needs. Surgeons in Dermatology, Otolaryngology (ENT) and Oral/Maxillofacial Surgery also have training and expertise in reconstructive and cosmetic surgery.

In addition to caring for patients in their clinical practices, Mayo Clinic's faculty members are committed to teaching and facilitating the growth of medical knowledge. Many faculty have published and lectured extensively and are highly regarded in their field. You will have direct access to the faculty at Mayo Clinic in Arizona throughout your training.

Advisers and Mentors
You will be assigned a faculty adviser who can provide comprehensive educational advice and personal support. Your adviser also will serve as a contact point, introducing you and your family to the Mayo Clinic system.

Visiting Professors
Many prominent professors visit Mayo Clinic each year. They present their work during noon and/or morning lectures and participate in hospital rounds. You will be encouraged to take full advantage of these opportunities.

Didactic Training

All residents and faculty will be required to attend the plastic surgery grand rounds, plastic surgery research meeting, morbidity and mortality, journal club, and the surgical indications conference.

Research Training
Mayo offers outstanding opportunities for you to conduct basic scientific or clinical research. Scholarly activity is recognized as an integral part of the residency for the faculty and residents. A Plastic Surgery Research Conference currently meets every other month. Plastic Surgery residents are required to attend this conference, which facilitates the process and development of clinical research, primarily, as a collaborative effort between the faculty and residents. Potential research projects are discussed.  Current research progress reports are prepared. The fundamentals of generating research, including statistics, ethical principles, and the preparation of presentations and manuscripts, are reviewed with the faculty and residents. Each resident is expected to participate in at least one research project annually with a faculty mentor, leading to a peer-reviewed publication. Oral presentations at local, national, or international meetings are encouraged, with time away from the practice provided in accordance with Mayo Clinic policy.

Call Frequency
Your call schedule will vary by rotation. Mayo Clinic follows the schedule recommendations of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

Evaluation
To ensure that you acquire adequate knowledge and develop your technical skills, your performance will be monitored carefully during the course of your training. You will be evaluated formally by your supervising faculty member after each clinical rotation. In addition, you will regularly evaluate the faculty to ensure that your educational needs are being met.
