Program Description

The advanced general thoracic surgery fellowship is offered to those individuals who have already successfully completed an approved thoracic surgery residency or its equivalent and desire an additional one or two years to supplement their training in general thoracic surgery. Emphasis is placed on all aspects of general thoracic surgery, including pulmonary resection, esophageal pathology and minimally invasive surgery.

During the year, the fellow participates in the preoperative evaluation, surgical operation and postoperative management of virtually all of the thoracic conditions. The fellow is expected to take in hospital call during this period of time. Call is currently every fifth or sixth weekday night in house and every other weekend on call from home.

Clinical research during the year is recommended. Most fellows have several manuscripts accepted for publication during their one-year fellowship.

Formal conferences in general thoracic surgery problems are scheduled several times each week. Fellows may also be able to attend seminars and lectures in general surgery and cardiac surgery.
