Clinical Training
Our program is designed to provide you with exposure to a wide spectrum of procedures that are not necessarily appropriate for the chief residents, but are designed for an advanced trainee and complicated upper GI surgery.
The program is, in large part, HBP in focus but also involves gastric and some esophageal surgery, major oncologic-type abdominal procedures, and some colon and rectal surgery. While this is not primarily a laparoscopic fellowship, there will be considerable laparoscopy involved in your clinical training.
Research Training
You will focus on one specific aspect of research during this fellowship, be it clinical or benchwork. There has been about a 50/50 split between benchwork research and clinical project research with the previous GI Scholars. You will be assigned with one of the consultants (staff surgeons) who is involved in your field of interest and this person will also serves as your primary mentor.
The goal is that you will not only be involved with the basic program, but also with some academic pursuits, such as writing book chapters, review articles, clinical papers, and basic research paper.
Didactic Training
From an educational standpoint, you will participate in limited, but not heavily oriented educational opportunities. There are several laboratory-based seminars throughout the year, such as a basic stapling seminar, basic laparoscopy seminar, advanced stapling seminar, and an advanced laparoscopy seminar, and you will participate as one of the faculty in these courses.
In addition, you may assist senior residents to begin certain operations for some of the mobilization and then take over when the part of the operation is appropriate for the GI Scholar. We recommend that you give one educational seminar throughout the year based on your research interests.
Administrative Activities
We recommend that you participate in some of the administrative duties of an academic surgeon, such as being on an education committee with participation in selection of incoming residents.
The Education Committee meets on a monthly basis to evaluate performance of residents. You also will participate as an active member of the Surgical Research Committee involved in some of the problems and duties of a department in running its research opportunities.
