Program Description

The one-year Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship Program at Mayo Clinic in Rochester offers:

  • A training curriculum that qualifies you for certification by the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery.
  • The opportunity to see and work with a wide variety of pathological conditions.
  • A rotation schedule that includes experience in endoscopy, anorectal diseases and colon diseases.
  • A one-week course about pelvic and anorectal anatomy using cadaver dissection.
  • The opportunity to work in a group practice featuring close collaboration with other medical specialties.

Mayo Clinic's favorable faculty ratio, large patient population and state-of-the-art diagnostic, therapeutic and research facilities combine to create a truly integrated educational experience. The "Mayo Clinic way" of graduate medical education ensures you will have the finest teaching and the broadest patient care experience possible during a busy, hands-on training program.

Clinical Training
During Mayo Clinic's Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship Program, you will work closely with Mayo Clinic's eight colon and rectal surgeons. You will participate in preoperative patient evaluations, operative procedures and postoperative care. Every other day will be spent in the operating room, gaining experience in surgical management of colon and rectal disease.

On nonoperative days, you will gain extensive experience in flexible sigmoidoscopies and colonoscopies and will learn the techniques for anorectal manometry. During the last six months of your residency, you also will see and evaluate patients independently.

Your residency will include training with Mayo Clinic stomal nurses. You will learn how to care for stomas and deal with stomal complications.

Didactic Training
Clinical conferences, seminars, journal clubs and one-on-one instruction are all an integral part of Mayo Clinic's Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship Program. You will participate in:

  • A weekly seminar series that is sponsored by the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery and presented by residents or faculty members
  • A one-week course in pelvic and anorectal anatomy using cadaver dissection
  • A weekly seminar series sponsored by the Division of Gastroenterology
  • A weekly seminar series in surgery that is sponsored by the Department of General Surgery and attended by residents and faculty members
  • A visiting faculty program that features outstanding surgeons from other institutions
  • An extensive schedule of optional didactic conferences in many surgical and medical subspecialties and basic sciences

Research Training
Your opportunities in both clinical and basic research are outstanding. You will be encouraged to pursue a project of personal interest, to write a report suitable for publication, and to present the report at the annual meeting of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.
