Program Description
The Cardiovascular Surgery Fellowship is offered to those
individuals who have already successfully completed an approved
thoracic surgery residency or its equivalent and desire an additional
one or two years to supplement their training in cardiothoracic surgery. Emphasis
may be placed on any of the areas of thoracic, adult cardiac, congenital
heart disease or cardiopulmonary transplantation.
For those interested in limiting their experience to one of these
areas, the year is designed to provide a minimum of nine months
of exposure to the field of specific interest. A limited rotation
at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Ariz., may be possible, depending
upon visa status for foreign fellows.
During the year, the fellow participates in the preoperative evaluation,
surgical repair (as a first assistant), and postoperative management
of virtually all of the thoracic and cardiac conditions. Due to
the complexity of many of these cases, independent operative experience
is not available, and operative experience under the guidance of
the staff surgeon is variable, depending on the type of procedure
and on the fellow's expertise. The fellow is expected to participate
in hospital call during this period of time. This includes intensive
care unit call on both weekdays and weekends, in-hospital call on
operative days, and out-of-hospital call on weekends.
Fellows are encouraged to participate in clinical research projects.
These are usually retrospective studies of particular topics and
there are many facilities (libraries, computers, statistics, and
audiovisual aids) available to assist in these clinical projects.
As a result of these studies, it is anticipated that individuals
will generate results and information suitable for publication in
a major cardiothoracic journal as well as at a cardiothoracic society
conference.
Formal seminars on thoracic and cardiovascular surgical problems
are scheduled several times each week. Fellows are also encouraged
to attend seminars and lectures in general surgery and allied medical
fields. Outstanding surgeons from other institutions participate
in an active visiting faculty member program.
Graduates of foreign medical schools require certification by the
Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). In
order to obtain this sponsorship, individuals need must pass either
the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or the former
Foreign Medical Graduate Exam in the Medical Sciences (FMGEMS) and
the ECFMG English examination, and provide proof of a medical school
diploma. As of July 1, 1998, the Clinical Skills Assessment examination
is also required to obtain certification.
