Program Description
Mayo Clinic Arizona, One year fellowship. Rotations with four Plastic Surgery Attendings. Emphasis on microsurgery (including perforator flaps), breast surgery: free breast reconstruction with DIEP flaps, TRAM Flap reconstruction, breast augmentation, breast implant problems, aesthetic surgery, and hand surgery. Includes one week microsurgery course at Mayo Clinic Rochester. Requires completion of Plastic Surgery Residency.
Clinical Training
The program is designed to provide additional patient care and surgical
experience for residents who have completed a plastic and reconstructive
surgery residency and are board-eligible by The American Board of
Plastic Surgery.
The fellowship gives intensive experience in a wide range of cosmetic
surgical procedures of the breast including difficult silicone breast
implant problems, mastopexy, breast augmentation, and revision surgery.
Breast reconstruction with microsurgery techniques include DIEP
flaps, free TRAM, and tissue expanders are stressed.
Rotations
During the year , the fellow will rotate with each Mayo
plastic surgeon. During the rotations, the fellow and his or her
preceptor will spend alternating days in the outpatient clinic and
the operating room. The fellow will also have the opportunity to
participate in a multidisciplinary breast clinic, working with oncology,
general surgery, and radiation oncology to develop patient algorithms
and best patient outcomes.
Didactic Training
Clinical conferences, seminars, small discussion groups, journal
clubs and one-on-one instruction are integral parts of the program.
Each fellow will be expected to give eight to 12 short presentations
on topics relating to plastic surgery. Also includes a one-week
microsurgery course at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
Research Training
Each fellow will be required to complete one clinical paper for
presentation at national or international meetings. Each of the
supervising consultants is active in clinical research, and the
fellow may choose from a wide variety of clinical topics.
Admissions
Qualifications
Qualified applicants must have completed a general surgery residency program at an accredited institution. Completion of a plastic surgery residency program is preferred. Due to state licensure requirements, candidates MUST have completed three years of training within a U.S. or Canadian institution.

Appointments are confirmed in a formal written letter of appointment
from Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education. This letter, a copy
of which you will be asked to sign and return, constitutes your
formal residency appointment to Mayo School of Graduate Medical
Education.

Positions
One position is available each year in the Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship Program on a competitive
basis.

In addition to the standard application materials required by MSGME, this program requires the following additional supporting materials to be submitted with your online application:
- Letters of recommendation from your surgery program director and two from plastic surgery faculty members at your current institution
Applications for each academic year, which begins on June 30,
should be completed by September 1 of the previous calendar
year.
Applicants considered for an appointment
will be invited to visit Mayo Clinic in Arizona for a personal interview
with the program director and selected faculty.
