You will spend approximately half of each week in the Family Medicine Department either in the Sports Medicine Clinic or in the Family Medicine Clinic. The other half of the week you will participate in clinical services rotations.

Clinical service rotations include:

  • Orthopedics
  • Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
  • Hand Surgery
  • Pediatric Orthopedics
  • Cardiac Stress Testing / Cardiac Rehabilitation
  • Nutrition
  • Physical Therapy
  • Research
  • Disordered Eating Clinic
  • Musculoskeletal Radiology
  • One elective month

You will provide medical coverage for various athletic events including a series of sprint triathlons, junior tennis tournaments and a wheelchair tennis camp.

You will cover high school sports including football, basketball and soccer. Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville covers three high schools, including the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind. Sports physicals are provided at a local high school and also as part of countywide physicals. You will have some exposure to the medical care of professional tennis players, by helping with coverage of the Bausch and Lomb Tennis Championships, a Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour event.

The Sports Medicine Fellow provides team physician services for the University of North Florida , a NCAA Division II school, under the direction of the head team physician. This includes pre-season physicals and athletic event coverage and training room clinics.

Research
A research project is required. Specific research time is set aside for you to complete the project.

Weekly Conference
There is a weekly sports medicine fellow's conference with either the program director or the other primary care sports medicine faculty. There is also a monthly sports medicine multi-disciplinary conference attended by faculty from orthopedics, physical medicine and physical therapy.

Call Frequency
There is no night call for the Sports Medicine fellow.
