Ongoing Professional Development
As a Mayo Clinic resident or fellow, you will have the opportunity to participate in a broad range of educational experiences designed to enhance your knowledge and skills as well as promote the development of your career.
Residents and fellows receive the benefits of mentoring with a member of the Mayo consulting staff throughout their training program. You'll meet periodically with faculty within your program to discuss career goals.
Mayo Clinic actively recruits staff physicians from its graduate medical education programs. When you successfully complete your training, job opportunities may be available at one of Mayo's campuses.
Advanced subspecialty training
You may wish to continue your education after completing your residency training. Opportunities available at Mayo Clinic include:
- Fellowships. After completing your residency, you may want to pursue one of the fellowships available in multiple medical and surgical specialties. Learn about the fellowship programs available.
- Clinical and translational research training. The Mayo Clinic Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCaTS) offers education and career development programs in clinical and translational science that span the career spectrum.
Research and community service opportunities
Residents and fellows also have the opportunity to broaden their education and participate in additional programs during their training. These include:
- Clinician-Investigator Training Program. The Clinician-Investigator Training Program provides a two- or three-year integrated, comprehensive educational experience for residents and fellows interested in a career that includes research within a robust clinical practice.
- Mayo International Health Program. The Mayo International Health Program enables residents and fellows to pursue elective rotations in underserved international communities.
Each year, Mayo Clinic bestows several awards to recognize outstanding residents and fellows in their last year of training who have excelled in clinical performance, humanitarianism and scholarly activity.
Health care systems and practice management
The Mayo Clinic Robert D. and Patricia E. Kern Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery is a leading innovator in developing efficient and effective systems for delivering safe, high-quality health care for every patient. This center's research activities, along with the expertise of the Mayo Clinic faculty, serve as an excellent resource for all trainees.
Woven throughout their clinical and research rotations, trainees learn about the components of an effective health care system, key practice management strategies and how to successfully adapt to the changing landscape of the health care environment.
Board review courses
Mayo Clinic provides extensive support for trainees as they prepare for their board certification examinations. Trainees may participate in written self-assessment and mock oral examinations offered by their department to prepare for board examinations. In addition, trainees can use designated travel time to participate in board review courses and to take their examinations.
As a result of this support, the majority of Mayo Clinic trainees pass their board certification exams on their first attempt.
Continuing medical education
Mayo School of Continuous Professional Development offers more than 300 courses and 7,300 hours of cutting-edge continuing medical education each year. These courses are available to residents, fellows and consulting staff at no charge.
