Curriculum
Clinical training
You participate in all aspects of patient care and function independently in surgical cases. You are adequately supervised at all times for surgical cases and are primarily responsible for perioperative management of all surgical and hospitalized patients.
Rotation schedule
Fellows spend two weeks with each faculty member multiple times throughout the year. Although fellows receive training in all areas of minimally invasive surgery, the rotation schedule is tailored toward specific academic goals. One day of dedicated research time is provided each week.
Didactic training
You participate in all departmental conferences, journal clubs and training events throughout the academic year. You coordinate the simulation and training activities for minimally invasive urologic techniques in the Department of Urology and oversee training assessments for residents in this regard.
Research training
You are encouraged to actively pursue new research projects. A broad range of research opportunities are available within the urologic fellowship program. One day a week is devoted to one or more research projects.
Mayo Clinic's Minimally Invasive Urologic Surgery Fellowship actively supports the preparation of manuscripts for publication and travel to regional and national meetings to present research data.
Each fellow submits one manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed journal before the end of the fellowship and completes one review article or book chapter.
Call frequency
Minimally Invasive Urologic Surgery fellows are not scheduled to take call.
Teaching opportunities
You meet periodically with your mentor and the program director to discuss individual goals and future career plans.
If you have an interest in education, an opportunity to present didactic lectures to the residents is provided. The fellow also attends the annual Teach-the-Teacher Symposium held in the Department of Urology for faculty development purposes.
Conferences
The fellow attends the weekly Urology Imaging & Pathology conference. Additionally, the fellow participates in the Genitourinary Oncology conference conducted every other week, the monthly Morbidity & Mortality conference, and journal club. Several weekly, biweekly and monthly integrated conferences are open for a fellow to attend in the areas of general surgery, radiology, oncology, pathology and so on.
Evaluation
To ensure you gain proficiency and develop the corresponding technical skills, supervising faculty members monitor your performance throughout this program.
Your supervising faculty member completes competency-based electronic evaluations after each clinical rotation and then meets with the program director to review these evaluations on a quarterly basis and more frequently if necessary. In addition, the fellow has the opportunity to evaluate the faculty to ensure educational goals are being met.
