Curriculum
Clinical rotations
Your clinical training will cover subspecialty areas of surgical critical care. Clinical rotations include 10 months of required rotations and two months of electives.
Required rotations
- Trauma/General Surgical ICU (6 months)
- Cardiovascular Surgical ICU (1 month)
- Pediatric ICU (1 month)
- Vascular/Thoracic ICU and
- Neuroscience ICU (1 month)
- Transplant ICU (1 month)
- Bronchoscopy (1 month)
- Hyperbaric chamber (1 week)
Elective options
- Acute care surgery (1 month)
- Echocardiography (1 month)
- Nephrology ICU (1 month)
- Medical ICU (1 month)

Didactic training
Clinical conferences, formal courses, seminars, small discussion groups, journal clubs and one-on-one instruction are all integral parts of the fellowship.
Fellows complete the following courses:
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support Provider
- Advanced Trauma Life Support
- Advanced Trauma Life Support Instructor
In addition, each fellow attends and becomes an instructor in the courses Fundamental Critical Care and Pediatric Fundamental Critical Care. Surgical Critical Care fellows also attend an advanced trauma operative management course and the American College of Surgeons Ultrasound in the Surgical ICU course.
Fellows attend a national critical care meeting, such as a meeting of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma or Western Trauma Association.
Research training
Research opportunities are available to fellows interested in academics. Advisers and resources are available and each fellow is encouraged to obtain instructor of surgery status upon their start in the fellowship.
Call frequency
Your call schedule will vary by individual rotation. Mayo Clinic follows the recommendations of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Teaching opportunities
You will have the opportunity to teach Mayo Medical students, visiting students and residents on a regular basis. In addition, fellows teach Advanced Trauma Life Support, Fundamental Critical Care and Pediatric Fundamental Critical Care courses.
Evaluation
To ensure you gain proficiency and develop the corresponding technical skills, your performance is monitored throughout this program. You are formally evaluated by your supervising faculty member after the completion of each clinical rotation, and then you meet with the program director to review these evaluations. In addition, you regularly evaluate the faculty to ensure your educational goals are being met.
