Department and Faculty
The Division of Gastroenterologic and General Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., has one of the largest and most experienced groups of gastroenterologic, hepato-pancreatico-biliary and general surgeons in the United States. Gastrointestinal Surgeons provide comprehensive diagnosis, management and follow-up of surgical disorders of the liver, pancreas, biliary, and gastrointestinal tract and allied disorders.
The 16 staff surgeons perform more than 4,500 operations annually and have a combined 180 years of experience. Our GI Surgery division, inclusive of HPB Surgery, has led the country as the Number 1 Group in Gastroenterology (and GI Surgery) in "US World and News Report" each year since 1997.
You will be assigned a faculty adviser who can provide comprehensive clinical, educational, and research advice and personal support. The adviser also serves as a contact point, introducing you and your family to Mayo Clinic.
Many prominent professors and other visiting surgeons visit Mayo Clinic each year to present their work during morning and afternoon lectures and interact with the Mayo staff in the operating room. Residents and fellows are encouraged to take full advantage of these opportunities to interact with visiting academic surgeons and are provided time from clinical assignments to do so.
