Mayo Clinic's Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology in Rochester is one of the largest clinical laboratories in the world. It is composed of 1,600 people working in 40 specialty laboratories performing more than 22 million tests each year.
A highly skilled team of medical professionals works collaboratively within the department, including physicians, scientists, pathologists' assistants, medical technologists, medical technicians, lab assistants, biologists, chemists, microbiologists, geneticists, and other specialists. The department receives specimens for testing from Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, Arizona and Florida, as well as Mayo Clinic Health System sites. It is also a reference laboratory for other clinics and hospitals both nationally and internationally.
Mayo Medical Laboratories (MML) is the referral center for Mayo Clinic. MML specializes in esoteric laboratory testing for health care organizations throughout the United States and around the world. MML's mission is to support the local delivery of laboratory services through the provision of exceptional reference laboratory services and by providing support services that facilitate and augment community integration efforts.
Within the department, the Division of Anatomic Pathology is comprised of more than 55 pathologists, with subspecialty expertise covering the entire field of anatomic pathology. The division is organized around working groups dedicated to specific organ systems. Currently, there are seven pathologists in the division who specialize in medical renal pathology.
In addition to the renal biopsy laboratory mentioned above, the division is supported by full-service laboratories in histology, immunohistochemistry, molecular genetics and cytogenetics.
