Department and Faculty

The Department of Neurosurgery at Mayo Clinic in Florida consists of seven neurosurgeons. The department includes subspecialty teams in complex and minimally invasive spine, cerebrovascular, tumor and functional neurosurgery. Close collaboration with colleagues and team members in neurology and neurocritical care provide an outstanding opportunity to learn the science and art of neurosurgery as part of a multidisciplinary team. Research opportunities are available in all these areas, including unique opportunities for collaboration with renowned basic scientists in neurodegenerative diseases.

Neurosurgery faculty members supervise all residents' patient-care activities. Supervision is based on the complexity of the case and on residents' training, experience and demonstrated competence. Residents receive less direct supervision over time as their experience and abilities grow.

In addition to working with program faculty, you will be assigned allied health staff to provide support for duties that don't require a physician. These staff members include medical secretaries, registered nurses, schedulers, and other clinical and administrative staff.

You will be assigned a staff mentor to review your progress and career goals. Your mentor will meet with you periodically throughout your residency to ensure that your educational needs are being met.

Visiting professors

Many prominent professors visit Mayo Clinic each year. They present their work during afternoon and morning lectures, and participate in hospital rounds and informal discussions with residents and fellows. You will be encouraged to take full advantage of these opportunities.
