Geriatric Medicine Fellowship (Arizona)

Program description

The one-year Geriatric Medicine Fellowship at Mayo Clinic's campus in Phoenix/Scottsdale, Arizona, consists of clinical, didactic and research components designed to expose trainees to the essential elements of geriatrics.

The goal of this fellowship is to develop academic leaders with skills in clinical geriatrics, research, geriatric medical education and administration. A strength of this fellowship is its committed core teaching faculty, including five board-certified geriatricians.

The fellowship provides many unique clinical training opportunities in key specialty clinics, including:

  • Behavioral neurology
  • Physical medicine and rehabilitation
  • Geriatric psychiatry
  • Wound care
  • Hospice
  • Palliative medicine

Fellows who complete the program will be able to evaluate and manage a broad spectrum of geriatric syndromes through the entire continuum of care, including in these settings:

  • Ambulatory clinic
  • Acute care
  • Rehabilitation hospital
  • Subacute care
  • Long-term care
  • Assisted living
  • Home care

After successfully completing this fellowship, you will have a solid understanding of the physiology of aging. You will also be well-versed in geriatric health care financing, as well as regulatory and other administrative issues pertinent to the care of older adults.

Accreditation

The Geriatric Medicine Fellowship fulfills the requirements for geriatric medicine training as stated by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

Certification

Upon completing this program, fellows are eligible for the geriatric medicine certification examination offered by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Program history

The Geriatric Medicine Fellowship at Mayo Clinic's campus in Arizona is a newly developed and accredited program. It is anticipated that one fellow will complete training in this program annually.
