The first two years of your clinical training will be spent in core rotations. During the core rotations you will obtain the basic knowledge and technical skills needed before proceeding to more advanced training in a subspecialty area.
The first year consists of rotations through the various subspecialty laboratories. During the second year, the information learned in the laboratories will be applied to patient care (both inpatient and outpatient). The core rotation areas are described below.
- Hospital Service
- Two months per year
- You will supervise the team of residents, interns, medical students, nurse practitioners and visiting house staff with different attendings each week.
- CHF / Transplant Service
- One month per year
- Along with a nurse practitioner, you will supervise the service (with supervision by CHF attending staff).
- Minimum 2 months per year (if level II echocardiography required)
- During your first year of training, your first two months are in the clinical outpatient setting. Thereafter, this rotation will be in the hospital setting, in which transesophageal echocardiography and dobutamine echocardiography is also performed.
- Minimum two months
- Includes inpatient and outpatient consultation, invasive electrophysiology, defibrillator and permanent pacemaker insertions.
- Cardiac Catheterization
- Minimum four months
- You will train in state-of-the-art labs with experienced interventional cardiologists.
- Nuclear Cardiology
- Minimum two months
- During this rotation, you will interpret large volume of stress tests.
- Outpatient Continuity Clinic
- One half day per week
- This rotation is preceded by a 30 to 45 minute didactic session given by one of the attendings and supervised by the same attending physician.
- Minimum exposure will be 3,500 EKG's over three years.
- Opportunities are available in your area of interest, along with certain rotations at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.
During the Cardiovascular Diseases Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Arizona, you will participate in a variety of lectures and conferences, which include:
- One general cardiology conference/week including one journal club/month
- One catheterization conference per week (bimonthly)
- One echo and one EP conference monthly
- Professor rounds four times per month
- Core curriculum lectures from Rochester, Minn. once per week
In addition, there are conferences in other cardiology subspecialty areas in which you can participate.
The department will fund registration and travel expenses for attendance at one domestic cardiology meeting of your choosing, with approval from the program director.
You will spend a total of six months dedicated to research. A certain block of academic time will be dedicated to research. In addition, one to two days per week may be allotted to research during the echo rotation.
The department will fund your participation in national and regional meetings at which your clinical research data is presented. Publication of research in peer-reviewed journals is encouraged.
During the Cardiovascular Diseases Fellowship, you will be on call every fifth night in the first two years and one in 10 in the third year. This call can be taken from your home.
Moonlighting is not permitted during first 6 months of fellowship. Moonlighting is permitted for licensed fellows.
Moonlighting activities may be scheduled during those times when you are assigned to consultative or outpatient rotations.
Moonlighting should not interfere with the required learning and must not violate the ACGME's work hour rules or visa regulations. Moonlighting should not compromise your education, but rather enhance it.
Your performance will be monitored closely to ensure that clinical knowledge, judgment and technical skills meet the program expectations. You will be evaluated formally by the supervising faculty member after each clinical rotation.
You also will evaluate the faculty and program confidentially to ensure that your educational needs are being met. The division incorporates 360-degree reviews every six months, which include evaluations from attendings, house staff and nursing staff.
