Curriculum

Two Year Fellowship

The fellowship begins with an orientation program in Rochester, during the summer of the academic year. Next, fellows will spend eight weeks at the University of North Dakota (UND) School of Aerospace Sciences learning the basic principles of flight. Topics will include fixed and rotary wing flight, space flight, and a variety of other aerospace disciplines. Fellows will have the opportunity to obtain a private pilot's license if so inclined and qualified. This is followed by academic training at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health in Minneapolis, leading to a Masters of Public Health (MPH) degree. Possible specialization/concentration areas include:

  • Biostatistics
  • Epidemiology
  • Environmental Health
  • Public Health Administration
  • Community Health Education
  • Maternal and Child Health
  • Public Health Nutrition
  • Public Health Practice

While obtaining an MPH, you will receive full stipend and benefits from Mayo Clinic. In addition, tuition at the University of Minnesota will be paid. Many of our fellows commute between Rochester and Minneapolis, about 75 miles each way.

Objectives of the academic training at the University of Minnesota include:

  • Identify and define biological, chemical, physical, and other environmental factors that affect the health of persons in the community and be able to identify and define measures for the detection and control of those factors.
  • Identify and define social, cultural, political, economic, behavioral, and other factors that affect the health of persons in a community and be able to identify and define an appropriate method of changing those factors to achieve a higher level of health in that community.
  • Identify and describe components and operation of health service delivery systems as they affect prevention and health care for individuals in the community.
  • Identify, define, and demonstrate ability to apply methods, techniques, and procedures of information collection, storage, retrieval, analysis, reporting, and interpretation.
  • Identify and define factors that inhibit or facilitate cross-disciplinary cooperation and through course work or field experience, demonstrate the ability to apply this knowledge in the solution of public health problems requiring cross-disciplinary participation.

Rotations & Experiences

Core rotations include:

  • Flight familiarization (University of North Dakota John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences on-site rotation)
  • USAF School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM) Basic Flight Surgeon training (on-site training)
  • University of Minnesota's standard courses required for the M.P.H.

The Executive Program in Public Health Practice (EPHP) is part of the Public Health Practice Major. It offers a flexible curriculum that students may tailor to their career and practice. The program is aimed at professionals with significant work experience in the area of health or human services, and who also have an advanced degree, such as an M.D.

Forty-two credits are required for graduation. There is a basic curriculum (24.5 credits) consisting of the following courses:

*This course is offered the weekend prior to the start of the Public Health Institute

**These courses are offered online and in-person.

The remainder of credits are achieved in the Focus Area Curriculum (17.5 credit minimum). Students select an established focus area or design their own using an approved public health practice template. The focus area should be detailed in the applicant's statement of purpose and objectives. The focus area curriculum gives the student the opportunity to investigate specific public health applications. Students are required to choose at least one class from each of the four goals incorporating public health practice domains as established by the Council on Linkages. The four goals are: public policy development using a systems framework; interventions based on the dimensions of community and culture; assessment and application of basic public health sciences; and program management and communications principles.

The clinical requirement – includes supervised experience and training in clinical aerospace medicine, hyperbaric/hypobaric medicine, and multiple aeromedical training environments.

Clinical objectives at Mayo Clinic include:

  • Integrate individual patient and population-based medical approaches within aerospace practice underscoring the relationship between the environment, host, and disease.
  • Demonstrate understanding of ethical, social, legal, and cultural issues related to aeromedical preventive risk assessment and interventions.
  • Refine communication skills at all levels - groups, other health professionals - about health risks, and appropriate preventive interventions.
  • Develop skills in computer literature searching, word processing, and data management.
  • Demonstrate skills in applying epidemiologic concepts in study design, analysis, and critical appraisal of literature.
  • Demonstrate administrative skills in needs assessment, priority selection, program design, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Develop leadership skills and competence in the management of aerospace organizational challenges as they relate to the health of flyers and passengers.
  • Demonstrate understanding of aerospace environmental and occupational health issues and regulations.
  • Develop clinical aeromedical skills and competence in the management of complex aeromedical injuries and illnesses.

You will apply the principles learned in academic course work during the clinical experience in achieving the above objectives.

  • Hypobaric and hyperbaric chamber physiologic and clinical training
  • Military Aviation experiences including USAF School of Aerospace Medicine on-site courses
  • Space Medicine experiences (Mayo, FAA, NASA)
  • Aircraft Mishap Investigation and Prevention Course (USAFSAM)
  • Aircrew and Passenger Safety (courses, experiences at Mayo, USAFSAM, FAA including basic survival, complex systems, human error)
  • Civil Aviation/FAA experiences including the basic Aviation Medical Examiner course
  • Aeromedical Transport experiences including the USAF Advanced Concepts in Clinical Aeromedical Evacuation course and hands-on Mayo Transport experiences
  • Leadership, Business, Ethics, and Law seminars and courses
  • Aeromedical Research Project
  • Mayo on-site clinical experiences in Aerospace Medicine, Cardiology, Pulmonology, Otorhinolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Neurology, and Psychiatry
  • Electives (see below)

Many of these rotations will be spent off of the Mayo campus at sites including the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine, the FAA Civil Aeromedical Institute in Oklahoma City, and the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.

Electives
Some time is provided to pursue an elective rotation, which may include health-care administration, space medicine, travel medicine clinic, hyperbaric medicine, health-care policy and research center, and the General Clinical Research Center. The elective can be tailored to individual career goals in the aerospace medicine.

Research Training

Your opportunities for research experience at Mayo Clinic are outstanding. During the fellowship, you will complete a research project in the Division of Preventive, Occupational, and Aerospace Medicine. Fellows are encouraged to consider initiating their research project in their first year to allow sufficient time to accomplish a high quality and publishable project.

Additional research experience, varying from six months to one year, may be available as part of this fellowship. Outside funding is encouraged for those who wish to pursue this option.

Evaluation

To ensure that fellows acquire adequate knowledge and practical skills, program performance is monitored throughout the fellowship and formally evaluated quarterly. In-training exams will measure progress and prepare fellows for eventual board certification.
