Advanced Oncology Fellowship (Minnesota)

Program description

The one-year Advanced Oncology Fellowship at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota, is designed for physicians who are planning a career in one of six specialty areas:

  • Thoracic malignancies
  • Gynecologic malignancies
  • Gastroenterologic malignancies
  • Endocrine malignancies
  • Melanoma
  • Drug development and phase I clinical trials

The fellowship offers:

  • Preparation for a career with expertise in the above areas
  • Exposure to multidisciplinary approaches to patients with oncologic disorders
  • Research opportunities in clinical, translational and basic science research

The Advanced Oncology Fellowship includes opportunities to develop expertise in the evaluation and treatment of oncologic diseases through supervised longitudinal care of outpatients with leading academic experts in the field. The program structure includes well-rounded clinical training with research opportunities with world-class investigators and clinicians in a collegial environment.

Drug Development/Phase I Clinical Trials Track

In addition to the five disease-specific specialty tracks, the fellowship offers a Drug Development/Phase I Clinical Trials Track option that provides medical oncologists and hematology-oncologists with the necessary training to:

  • Develop therapeutic agents for cancer
  • Evaluate therapeutic agents' pharmacological properties and mechanisms of action
  • Incorporate biomarkers into clinical trials
  • Design and perform early-phase clinical trials
  • Understand the various processes needed to obtain regulatory approval of new oncologic agents

The Drug Development/Phase I Clinical Trials Track consists of one year of clinical and laboratory rotations and research as well as tutorial courses to educate the fellow in all aspects of cancer drug development. The tutorial coursework is enhanced by lecture series, attendance at national meetings and workshops, and student presentations of research results.

Accreditation

The Advanced Oncology Fellowship is an unaccredited one-year fellowship.
