Department and Faculty

Mayo Clinic is a leader in the treatment of cancer, neurodegenerative diseases and many other disorders that, in certain forms, are incurable. This provides our trainees a unique learning environment in which they can immediately apply acquired knowledge and skills.

Physicians in the Department of Family Medicine at Mayo Clinic's campus in Jacksonville, Florida, provide comprehensive medical evaluations and primary care for Jacksonville-area patients of all ages. Mayo's primary care centers include on-site laboratory and X-ray facilities.

Department of Family Medicine staff members in Jacksonville include three physicians who specialize in palliative care. Each consultant has considerable experience in evaluating and treating chronically and terminally ill patients, and each has his own particular interests, expertise and approach to patient diagnosis and management. Fellows have found this varied exposure very educational, as it allows them to develop their own style for evaluating and managing patients.

The staff has collectively published hundreds of manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals and contributed toward many well-known books.

In addition to caring for patients in their clinical practices, Mayo Clinic's faculty members are committed to teaching and facilitating the growth of medical knowledge. Many of our faculty have published and lectured extensively and are highly regarded in their fields.

You have direct access to these individuals throughout the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship.

Advisers and mentors

You are assigned a faculty adviser who can provide comprehensive educational advice and personal support. The adviser also serves as a contact point, introducing you and your family to Mayo Clinic and the communities in which you will train.

Visiting professors

Many prominent professors visit Mayo Clinic each year and present their work during lectures. Fellows are encouraged to take full advantage of these opportunities to interact with experts from other academic centers and are relieved from clinical assignments to do so.
