Application Process

There are six PGY-1 positions available each year through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Applications are only accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Do not fax, mail or email your curriculum vitae or application materials directly to the program.

Once your ERAS application is submitted, it will be reviewed by the program director and associate program director. If selected for an interview, you will receive an interview invitation by email.

Minimum qualification criteria for applicants

For your application to be reviewed and considered, you must:

  • Have passed the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX) on your first attempt. Applicants with scores greater than 200 or greater than 450, respectively, are given preference. All scores must be available before rank day.
  • Have graduated from medical school within the last two years. If you graduated more than two years before applying for this program, you must have at least one year of experience in the U.S. health care system within those two years prior to application.
  • Show clear evidence of a strong commitment to and experience in family medicine.
  • Submit three letters of recommendation (in addition to the dean's letter required by the ERAS), at least one of which should be from a family physician who has observed your clinical skills.

If you are an international graduate, you must have a valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate, and at least one year of experience within the U.S. health care system is recommended. Mayo Clinic supports ECFMG J-1 visas.
