Dermatology Residency Program

Mayo Clinic's Dermatology Residency offers a patient mix that provides experience with routine cases and unusual skin disorders, intensive didactic training, and a strong diagnostics program.

Residents are expected to participate in scholarly activity and may also participate in rotations at Mayo Clinic in Arizona or Florida. Training includes:

  • Clinical research
  • Dermatologic surgery
  • Dermatopathology
  • Immunodermatology
  • Inpatient and outpatient dermatology
  • Pediatric dermatology

Rotations include an inpatient primary dermatology service and the unique opportunity to manage patients with severe and complex dermatologic diseases in a hospital setting.

Mayo's diverse resident population includes participants from around the world. This group of young physicians shares a terrific sense of camaraderie. Residents from unique and interesting backgrounds share the desire to be phenomenal dermatologists.

During your training, you will have nearly limitless opportunities to participate in research and academic activities. The Department of Dermatology's large, international faculty has many unique research interests, including:

  • Complex medical disease
  • Cutaneous oncology
  • Lymphoma
  • Mucous membrane disease
  • Pediatric dermatology
  • Psoriasis
  • Transplant dermatology
  • Women's dermatology

Mayo's dermatology residency program fulfills training requirements as stated by The American Board of Dermatology, Inc. and is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education(ACGME).

Upon completion of the residency, participants will be eligible to take the American Board of Dermatology examination.

Program History
The dermatology residency at Mayo Clinic began in 1917. It was officially accredited by the ACGME in 1954. Nearly 500 physicians have completed the residency training. Up to eight residents complete training in this program annually.
