Clinical Research Training Program

Program Description
This two-year training program in clinical diagnostic medical physics is open to any individual who recently received a doctoral degree in medical physics, physics or engineering. The objectives of this program are twofold:

  • Provide broad training and experience for those who wish to pursue careers in clinical diagnostic imaging.
  • Provide a strong academic component for candidates who wish to follow a more academic path.

The program normally begins on July 1 in even years. It is structured to provide six months of general training in radiographic areas (including general X-ray, fluoroscopy, mammography and radiation safety), and two nine-month rotations in specialized areas.

The six-month general training period may include a three-month rotation to Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla. The two primary rotation areas are different for each resident, selected by the faculty from the following:

  • MRI, CT, ultrasound, digital X-ray and fluoroscopy
  • Mammography, nuclear medicine, PET and PET-CT
  • Radiology information management

The primary rotations are designed to support the clinical practice through both clinical and lab based research projects.

Certification
Upon completion of the Medical Physics Residency, you will be eligible for certification in Diagnostic Radiological Physics from the American Board of Radiology.

Program History
The Medical Physics Residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester began in 1990, and since then eight residents have completed the program. Of these eight, four have been hired to medical physics positions in the Radiology Department at Mayo Clinic in Rochester.
