The training program consists of core clinical rotations, research opportunities and a variety of elective opportunities.
Clinical Training
Core training experiences include:
- Inpatient and outpatient pulmonary consultation
- Critical care medicine
- End stage lung disease including lung transplant and LVRS
- Thoracic radiology
- Thoracic pathology
- Sleep medicine
- Pulmonary function testing, physiology and exercise testing
- Flexible bronchoscopy, including BAL, TBBX and TBNA
- Continuity specialty clinic
- Research
Electives
A variety of elective opportunities allow a fellow to individualize the training program in order to best meet his/her career goals. Elective experiences in related specialties including thoracic surgery, otorhinolaryngology, allergy and radiology.
Research Training
Your research opportunities at Mayo Clinic are outstanding. You are encouraged to participate in research projects with the consulting staff. This includes opportunities for clinical studies and laboratory-based projects.
Moonlighting
Moonlighting is permitted for licensed residents and fellows beyond the PGY-1 level. Moonlighting activities may be scheduled during those times when you are assigned to consultative or outpatient rotations. Moonlighting should not interfere with required learning and must not violate the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education’s (ACGME) work hour rules. Moonlighting should not compromise your education, but rather enhance it. The program director reserves the right to limit or disallow moonlighting if it does not support the goals and objectives of the training program or it limits a trainee’s educational advancement.
Evaluation
To ensure that you acquire adequate knowledge and develop your technical skills, your performance will be monitored carefully during the course of your fellowship. After each clinical rotation your supervising faculty will evaluate you formally. In addition, you will regularly evaluate the faculty to ensure that your educational needs are being met.
Call Frequency
The residency call rotation is different for each rotation. Mayo Clinic College of Medicine follows the recommendations of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Teaching Opportunities
Pulmonary medicine trainees are encouraged and expected to participate in the education of others. Fellows may be asked to participate both formally and informally in the educational activities of other training programs including internal medicine, general surgery and family practice. This participation may take the form of lecture preparation and presentation, journal club moderation and mentoring and informal teaching rounds. Additionally, fellows present lectures to the allied medical staff in respiratory therapy, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation and the ICU.
