The Department of Psychiatry and Psychology at Mayo Clinic is one of the largest psychiatric treatment groups in the United States, with more than 60 psychiatrists and psychologists representing every aspect of psychiatric medicine.

Mayo Clinic's psychiatrists are physicians who assume primary responsibility for the care of patients with mental disorders. In addition, many also are keenly committed to practical psychotherapy and believe it is essential to the practice of psychiatry. These values have helped place Mayo Clinic’s practice at the forefront of clinical consultation/liaison psychiatry, medical psychiatry and neuropsychiatry. At the same time, the theories, practices and humanistic traditions of the psychotherapeutic schools are valued and enthusiastically taught here.

Most patients are treated on an outpatient basis, but the department conducts several inpatient programs within its Psychiatry Treatment Center.  The Generose Building, part of Saint Marys Hospital, is a state-of-the-art psychiatric hospital that includes 82 beds divided amongst a child and adolescent unit, an acute adult unit, a medical psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry unit, and a mood disorders unit.  A residential and outpatient addiction program, a pain rehabilitation center, and an outpatient clinic round out the hospital’s clinical services.

Psychologists at Mayo Clinic are involved in several postgraduate psychology fellowships, including neuropsychology, child and family psychology, behavioral medicine and research.  These colleagues are involved in clinical, educational and research endeavors, working with adult psychiatry residents.

In addition to caring for patients in their clinical practices, Mayo Clinic's faculty members are committed to teaching and facilitating the growth of medical knowledge. Many of our faculty have conducted research, published and lectured extensively and are recognized leaders in their field. You will have direct access to these individuals throughout your training program.

Visiting Professors
Many prominent professors visit Mayo Clinic each year. They commonly present their work in Grand Rounds and occasionally extend their time with us to include additional teaching sessions with the residents. You are encouraged to take full advantage of these opportunities.
