Mayo Clinic's psychiatrists are physicians who assume primary responsibility for the care of patients with mental disorders. In addition, many are also keenly committed to practical psychotherapy and believe it is essential to the practice of psychiatry. These values have helped place our department at the forefront of consultation/liaison psychiatry, medical psychiatry and neuropsychiatry. At the same time, the theories, practices and humanistic traditions of the psychotherapeutic schools are valued and enthusiastically taught at Mayo Clinic.

Specialists in Psychiatry and Psychology at Mayo Clinic provide comprehensive evaluations, diagnosis and treatment for patients with psychiatric problems.

The Department of Psychiatry and Psychology at Mayo Clinic is one of the largest psychiatric treatment groups in the United States with more than 80 psychiatrists and psychologists representing every aspect of psychiatric medicine.

Most patients are treated on an outpatient basis, but the department conducts several inpatient programs within its Psychiatry Treatment Center, one of which is an active Medical-Psychiatry Unit, a focus of education for the Psychosomatic Fellowship.

In addition to caring for patients in their clinical practices, Mayo Clinic's faculty members are committed to teaching and facilitating the growth of medical knowledge. Many of our faculty have published and lectured extensively and are recognized leaders in their field. You will have direct access to these individuals throughout your training program.

Many staff members also conduct research and are involved in training new specialists.

Visiting Professors
Many prominent professors visit Mayo Clinic each year. They present their work during noon and/or morning lectures and participate in hospital rounds. You are encouraged to take full advantage of these opportunities.
