Name: Christine Kenyon, M.D. (Chief Resident, 2007-08)
Program: Anesthesiology, PGY-4 (CA-3), Mayo Clinic in Rochester
Hometown: Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Medical School: University of Wisconsin (Madison)
What attracted you to medicine and anesthesiology?
I became interested in medicine following a personal experience with an illness and the medical system. This led me to explore medical careers in both high school and college and eventually attend medical school. Anesthesiology allows me the opportunity to care for a wide variety of patients during serious illnesses and surgical procedures, which is very rewarding. I also enjoy the challenge of mastering new procedural skills and knowledge on a daily basis.
What attracted you to Mayo Clinic for residency training?
As I compared various residency programs, it was clear that Mayo Clinic was unmatched in combining clinical experience with resident education. The tremendous number and variety of surgical cases at Mayo provide exceptional training for the anesthesiology resident. In addition, the outstanding faculty and their commitment to resident education really impressed me when I interviewed at Mayo … and they have continued to impress me throughout my training.
What makes the Mayo Clinic Anesthesiology Residency unique? Anything surprise you about Mayo's program?
It’s the people who truly make the Mayo Clinic Anesthesiology residency unique. There is a remarkable group of faculty members, nurse anesthetists, support staff, and residents. I have been surprised at how, in such a large department, the faculty members really get to know each resident personally. I am also constantly impressed by my fellow residents and how willing everyone is to help and support each other.
What is living in Rochester like for you?
My husband -- a Radiology resident -- and I, enjoy living in Rochester. We purchased our first home here and also recently had a baby. Rochester is a very safe, family-friendly community, which makes it an ideal place to complete our training.
What does your future look like right now?
After my residency, I will be completing a Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship at Mayo Clinic next year. My ultimate goal is to practice in an academic setting, where I can combine clinical practice with research and medical education. I am confident that I will be very well prepared for either academic or private practice anesthesiology after completing my training at Mayo.
