Mayo Clinic Overview

Sarah Garber, M.D.Name: Sarah Garber, M.D. (Chief Resident, 2007-08)
Program: Anesthesiology, PGY-4 (CA-3), Mayo Clinic in Rochester
Hometown: Sarcoxie, Missouri
Medical School: University of Missouri (Kansas City)

What attracted you to medicine and anesthesiology?
"I am interested in anesthesia because it offers me an opportunity to blend clinical science with patient care. I especially enjoy obstetric anesthesia because it's fulfilling and rewarding to be able to provide care to mom and baby during the poignant times of labor and delivery."

What attracted you to Mayo Clinic for residency training?
"One of the great features that stands out about the Mayo Clinic residency program is its graduates. In their communities and their practices -- whether private or academic -- they are well respected and are some of the top leaders in their fields. It is a great opportunity to have the same base of residency education as these successful alumni."

What makes the Mayo Clinic Anesthesiology Residency unique?
"At Mayo Clinic, the patient is the center of the care team. Each individual plays a unique role in the team, but each understands the overall philosophy that the patients' needs come first. Every decision that is made, whether by an individual or a team, is based entirely on what is best for the patient."

Anything surprise you about Mayo's program?
"Everyone knows you by name. There are 18 residents per class and about 120 consultant faculty who all know you by first name. The consultant faculty takes a personal interest ineach resident's education and unique training."

What is living in Rochester like for you?
"Because it is not a major metropolitan area, Rochester allows for short commutes from home to work. There is never a rush-hour traffic jam. The city provides the opportunity of practicing at a major medical center with out the hassles or worries of a big metropolis."

What does your future look like right now?
"The future is wide open for me. With the strong basic science foundation and the excellent clinical training of my residency program, I am confident that at the completion of my residency program I will be able to provide excellent anesthesia care in whatever career I choose and wherever I go."
