 Program Description
The one-year Preliminary Internal Medicine Residency provides a solid foundation for further training in internal medicine or non-internal medicine specialties such as dermatology, radiology, anesthesiology, neurology and physical medicine. Although schedules vary slightly, preliminary medicine residents are otherwise indistinguishable from categorical residents and enjoy the same benefits and responsibilities.
Curriculum
Clinical Experience
The one-year program offers the same level of autonomy for patient care and the same clinical teaching given to categorical residents.
There are no private patients or private attendings at Mayo Clinic. All patients are cared for by intern-resident teams and a single attending physician.

Application Process
Positions
Twenty-four positions are available each year.
Apply
Applications must be submitted via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
Applications for each academic year that begins in July, should be completed by late November. You may apply to both the Preliminary Internal Medicine Program and a non-internal medicine specialty at Mayo Clinic. Many of the applicants who interview at non-internal medicine specialty programs do not need to interview with the Internal Medicine program during their visit to Rochester. Graduates of allopathic medical schools in the U.S. who will begin the preliminary residency in the year after completion of medical school are not required to interview separately for our internal medicine preliminary program if they are interviewing with the following non-medicine specialty programs: Anesthesiology, Dermatology, Neurology, Ophthalmology, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. However, due to the limited availability of preliminary program positions assigned to these specialties, candidates are encouraged to seek an interview if they want to be considered for a position in the preliminary internal medicine program regardless of where they match for their specialty training. Check with the internal medicine residency program office if you have questions about whether you are eligible for this option.
