Program Description
The Sports Rehabilitation Medicine Fellowship at Mayo Clinic
in Rochester is a one-year program in nonoperative sports medicine.
The fellowship is sponsored by the Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine Center,
which is a joint venture of the Departments of Physical Medicine &
Rehabilitation and Orthopedic Surgery.
This fellowship involves the primary care of patients with sports,
fitness or recreational activity-related injuries that adversely
affect their ability to participate in physical activity. You will
pend the majority of the fellowship in clinical activities at the
Sports Medicine Center, but will regularly rotate in Mayo Clinic
Electrodiagnostic Laboratory and the Musculoskeletal Clinic.
Elective rotations include Spine Center, Radiology, Hand Clinic,
Foot Clinic, and Pain Clinic. The fellowship includes training in
peripheral injections, musculoskeletal ultrasound, ultrasound-guided
procedures, and electrodiagnosis.
Fellows have ample opportunities to participate in sports medicine
related research. Time and support services will be available to facilitate
completion of the research requirement. Fellows will regularly participate
in team coverage and mass participation sporting events.
The Mayo Sports Rehabilitation Medicine Fellowship provides exposure to
a broad spectrum of the practice of musculoskeletal Physical Medicine &
Rehabilitation and prepares fellows for sports- and musculoskeletal-based
practices in academic or private practice settings, including multidisciplinary
groups.

The Sports Rehabilitation Medicine Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester
was established in 1990. It is anticipated that one trainee will complete the
fellowship each year. Our graduates have been successful at obtaining positions
in multi-specialty group and academic institutions, including Rehabilitation
Institute of Chicago, Kessler, The Hospital for Special Surgery, Johns Hopkins,
University of Michigan, and Mayo Clinic.
The Sports Medicine Center staff treats sports and activity-related injuries
to facilitate a quick return to sport and activity. The Center provides
a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to diagnose problems and injuries
that affect the musculoskeletal system. The Center is an outpatient clinic
and is affiliated with Mayo Clinic's Department of Physical Medicine &
Rehabilitation and the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. You will have direct
access to the Sports Medicine Center staff at Mayo Clinic in Rochester
throughout your training.
Both competitive and recreational athletes are at risk of injury that
limits their performance. The Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine Center involves
specialists from a variety of disciplines who work in concert to meet the
needs of each patient. In addition to caring for patients in their
clinical practices, Mayo Clinic's faculty members are committed to teaching
and facilitating the growth of medical knowledge. Many of our faculty have
published and lectured extensively and are highly regarded in their field.
