General Admissions Requirements
Applications are accepted only via ERAS.

  • Medical residencies are open to qualified graduates of accredited U.S. and Canadian medical schools.
  • To qualify for admission, graduates from medical schools outside the U.S. and Canada must be certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). Information about certification and visa sponsorship, if required, is available from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates.
  • Mayo supports ECFMG J-1 visa sponsorship for residents enrolled in graduate medical education.

  • All applicable licensure eligibility requirements must be fulfilled prior to starting a Mayo residency program.
  • If you match through the National Resident Matching Program to a Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education (MSGME) residency training program in Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine in Rochester, Minn., at graduate level one, your MSGME training program will begin on June 26, 2009 and end July 1, 2012. Continuation and completion of the program depend on your satisfactory progress in education, performance of all duties, and compliance with Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education (MSGME) policies. Visit http://www.mayo.edu/msgme/admissions.html for a summary of policies.

  • Your appointment to Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education is contingent upon meeting the following conditions prior to the start of your training program:

    1. The following documents and letters must be received by MSGME:
      • A copy of your medical school diploma; and
      • If applicable, a copy of your ECFMG certificate
    2. In addition, you must:
      • If applicable, obtain ECFMG J-1 visa classification by June 15, 2009.
      • Submit to a health review and pass a urine drug screen administered at Mayo Clinic;
      • Pass both Minnesota and national background checks; and
      • Provide proof of your legal right to work by bringing documents that establish your identity and employment eligibility to the MSGME orientation.
    3. If you are currently in medical school, you must have your school’s registrar send your final grade transcript to MSGME upon graduation.
    4. Appropriate medical and licensure and/or registration are required with the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice before beginning your training program. You will apply for a Residency Permit. Please complete, sign, and return it to MSGME. Mayo Clinic will pay the registration fee. The appropriate application instructions will be mailed to you upon completion and return of the enclosed questionnaire.
