Clinical Training
During your Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship clinical training,
you will have supervised experiences caring for a large number of
patients with a broad range of hematological and oncological problems.
The Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology evaluates 125 to 130
new oncology patients annually.
Rotation Schedule

Didactic Training
Clinical conferences, seminars, small discussion groups, journal
clubs and one-on-one instruction are all integral parts of the program.
You also can enroll in courses for credit within Mayo Graduate School.
Courses cover topics such as medical statistics, cancer biology,
biochemistry, immunology and pharmacology.
Research Training
During the latter half of the first year, you can choose a laboratory-based
research project. Fellows can do a master's in clinical research
training or public health . For clinically oriented fellows alternate
clinical research pathways are available. During this project, which
should have a well-defined goal, you will learn basic science techniques
in molecular genetics, biochemistry, immunology and pharmacology.

Evaluation
To ensure that you acquire adequate knowledge and develop your technical
skills, your performance will be monitored carefully during the
course of your fellowship. First year fellows meet monthly with
the fellowship program director. All fellows are evaluated on a
quarterly basis with forms developed specifically for the clinical
and lab-based rotations.
Call Frequency
Fellows are required to be on call only when assigned to hospital
service. Mayo Clinic follows the recommendations of the Accreditation
Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Teaching Opportunities
Fellows have ample opportunities for teaching residents and medical
students in the clinical setting. They also participate in morning
report and chief's conference weekly while on hospital service.
In addition, they are assigned to give one noontime lecture to the
residents per year. During their third year, the fellows present
their research at pediatric grand rounds/research conference.
