The Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellowship will provide you with
extensive clinical experience in general pediatric gastroenterology
in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Training in a variety
of endoscopic procedures, as well as other diagnostic and therapeutic
techniques, will also be included.
Rotation Schedule
The following is a typical rotation schedule. The rotations
can be individualized according to your needs and interests in order
to maximize the potential for developing an academic career path.
Year One
- Peds GI Clinical Service
- Endoscopy
- Electives
- Research
Year Two
Year Three
- Nutrition
- Advanced Procedures

- Fellows Service
Didactic Training
An extensive array of didactic conferences and programs is available
during this fellowship. Attendance at two weekly pediatric GI conferences
is required. In addition, you are expected to present one GI Grand
Rounds session yearly and one clinical GI conference. At least 10
conferences are held each week that encompass various areas in gastroenterology
and hepatology. You also will participate in journal club.
Research Training
Time is set aside each year for focused training in research. The
first year you will pick a topic and begin work. You may select
a project that is either clinical or laboratory based. The second
year of the fellowship is normally devoted entirely to research.
You will learn research protocol, development, research techniques,
and how to evaluate results. The research experience typically lasts
from 15 to 18 months, but additional research time is available
if needed.
Call Frequency
Call frequency is one week per month of call from home and two weekends
per month also on call from home.
Teaching Opportunities
You will have the opportunity to teach medical students, residents
and faculty with at least twice monthly courses.
Evaluation
Evaluation during the fellowship will depend on your ability to
develop a base knowledge that allows you to formulate differential
diagnosis. You will be evaluated on your depth of knowledge of the
subject. Additionally, you should be able to perform all of the
pediatric gastroenterology procedures independently by the end of
your fellowship. Evaluation of your research potential will be conducted
with your mentor throughout the second and third years of the fellowship
program.
