Program Description
The subspecialty fellowship training program in Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics is a three-year program that develops the clinical skills of pediatricians in the assessment and treatment of children with developmental and behavioral disorders and prepares the fellow for an academic career in this sub-specialty.
Goals of the program include:
- Developing a core knowledge of the broad array of clinical diagnoses seen in developmental-behavioral pediatrics, as well as the principles and scientific bases of etiology, intervention and research
- Developing clinical competency in the assessment, diagnosis, anticipatory guidance, treatment and continuity of care of children with developmental-behavioral disorders
- Building advocacy skills, teaching experience, leadership skills and research accomplishment in the area of developmental-behavioral pediatrics
- Developing research skills through formal coursework in biostatistics and research methodology, as well as completion of a mentored research project
Accreditation
The training program fulfills the requirements (three years) for training as stated by the Sub-Board of Developmental-Behavioral Medicine of the American Board of Pediatrics. Prerequisites for admission include successful completion of training in a fully accredited residency program in general pediatrics in the United States.
Certification
The Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics Fellowship fulfills the requirements for subspecialty training as prescribed by the American Board of Pediatrics. Graduates are qualified to sit for the Developmental-Behavioral Specialty Sub-boards.
Program History
The Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics Fellowship Program began at Mayo Clinic Rochester in 2007 and will accept its first trainee to begin the program in 2008. Going forward, it is anticipated that one fellow will complete this program every three years.
