The three-year Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Program at Mayo Clinic
in Rochester is designed to prepare you for a full-time academic
career in pediatric cardiology. Graduates of this program can function
independently as program directors, support staff or laboratory
investigators in university medical schools or medical centers.
Accreditation
The training program fulfills the requirements (three years) for
training as stated by the Sub-Board of Pediatric Cardiology of the
American Board of Pediatrics and is accredited by the Liaison Committee
on Graduate Medical Education. Prerequisites for admission include
successful completion of training in a fully accredited residency
program in general pediatrics in the United States.
Certification
The Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship fulfills the requirements
for subspecialty training in pediatric cardiology prescribed by
the American Board of Pediatrics. Graduates are qualified to sit
for the Pediatric Cardiology Sub-board Examinations.
Program History
The Division of Pediatric Cardiology was established in
1969 by James DuShane, M.D., also one of the founders of the Pediatric
Cardiology Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the
Pediatric Cardiology Sub-board of the American Board of Pediatrics.
The Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Program began in 1960, and,
since that time, more than 70 physicians have completed pediatric
cardiology training at the Mayo Clinic. Many of these graduates
now act as divisional chairpersons in academic institutions or remain
on the staff of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology at Mayo Clinic.
In addition to these physicians, many others now active internationally
in the field of pediatric cardiology received part of their training
at Mayo Clinic. Going forward, it is anticipated that one fellow
will complete training in this program annually.
