Program Description
Mayo Clinic's Pain Medicine Fellowship provides training in acute, chronic and oncologic pain management. Using a problem-oriented approach, you will obtain pertinent histories, perform relevant physical examinations and order appropriate diagnostic tests.

The program will provide you with extensive experience in the medical management of pain, peripheral nerve blocks, trigger point injections, epidural injections, radiofrequency lesioning, continuous epidural infusions, peripheral nerve blocks, intrathecal drug delivery systems and spinal cord stimulation. You also will develop superior competence in all aspects of neural blockade.

Acute pain medicine training is focused primarily on postoperative patients. You will gain experience with epidural narcotics and local anesthetics and with caudal, interscalene, epidural, femoral, sciatic, psoas and axillary analgesia for adult and pediatric patients.

In addition, further clinical training in pain-related fields such as psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology or oncology is available.

Accreditation
The training program fulfills the requirements for training as stated by the American Board of Anesthesiology and is accredited by the ACGME

Certification
You will be eligible to take the American Board of Anesthesiology Pain Medicine examination upon completion of your fellowship.

Program History
The Pain Medicine Fellowship began in 2000, and since that time nine  physicians have completed training. It is anticipated that one fellow will complete training in this program annually.
