Program Description
Mayo Clinic's Pain Medicine Fellowship provides training in acute, chronic and oncologic pain management. Using a problem-oriented approach, you will obtain pertinent histories, perform relevant physical examinations and order appropriate diagnostic tests. You also will develop superior competence in all aspects of neural blockade.
Acute pain medicine training is focused primarily on postoperative patients. You will gain experience with epidural narcotics and local anesthetics and with caudal, interscalene, epidural, femoral, sciatic, psoas and axillary analgesia for adult and pediatric patients.
In addition, a research project may be completed and further clinical training in pain-related fields such as psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology or oncology.
Program History
The Pain Medicine Fellowship began in 2000, and since that time seven physicians have completed training. It is anticipated that one fellow will complete training in this program annually.
