Program Description
Mayo Clinic's Pain Medicine Fellowship provides comprehensive
training in acute, chronic, oncologic and interventional pain management.
Using a problem-oriented approach, you will take pertinent histories,
perform relevant physical examinations, and order appropriate diagnostic
tests and consultations. You will develop competence and expertise
in all aspects of neural blockade and interventional pain therapies.
Acute pain medicine training is focused primarily on patients with
acute painful medical problems and cancer pain. There is exposure
to perioperative regional analgesic techniques and a regional analgesia
rotation elective is available.
Chronic and cancer pain medicine training will teach you to be
an outstanding pain medicine consultant. The emphasis is on learning
to perform an appropriate evaluation and then formulate a treatment
plan. You will gain experience and familiarity with all aspects
of pain therapies, including medication management, physical modalities,
therapeutic exercise, behavioral therapies, complementary and alternative
medicine treatments, and interventional treatments.
There is an emphasis on interventional pain medicine training.
You will learn indications, contraindications, anatomy and theory
of interventional pain treatments. You will become proficient in
spine interventions and implantable technologies, and will learn
how to incorporate these therapies into a comprehensive treatment
program.
